Tell time to 5 minutes

Tell and write the time to five minutes, including quarter past/to, and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times; know the number of minutes in an hour and hours in a day

What you'll learn

  1. 1

On a clock, the short hand shows the hour and the long hand shows the minutes.

  2. 2

Count round in 5s for the long hand: 1 is 5 minutes, 2 is 10, 3 is 15 (quarter past), 6 is 30 (half past), 9 is 45 (quarter to).

  3. 3

The long hand points at 6. How many minutes past is it?

  4. 4

Once the long hand is past 6, we usually count backwards and say "to" the next hour.

  5. 5

    Short hand just past 8, long hand on 9. Count in 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45. That is 45 past 8 — or quarter to 9.

  6. 6

The long hand points at 3. What do we say?

  7. 7

The long hand is on 4. How many minutes past?
