Interpret discrete and continuous data

Interpret and present discrete and continuous data using appropriate graphical methods, including bar charts and time graphs; solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in bar charts, pictograms, tables and other graphs

What you'll learn

  1. 1

Imagine you have a bag of sweets 🍬. You can count them one by one — that's discrete data!

  2. 2

Which of these is discrete data?

  3. 3

Look at this picture. Discrete data is like counting coloured buttons 🟢🔵🟡 in a pile. Continuous data is like pouring water into a measuring jug and seeing how high it goes 📏.

  4. 4

Let's read a bar chart of pets. Each bar shows how many children have that pet. The bar for dogs goes up to 6 — that means 6 children have a dog!

  5. 5

Tap the bar that shows how many oranges are in the basket.

  6. 6

Now let's look at continuous data. Imagine a thermometer showing how hot it is 🌡️. You don't count the temperature — you read it on a scale!

  7. 7

Drag the thermometer to show 15°C — that's a continuous measurement!

  8. 8

Is the number of children in your class discrete or continuous data?
