Frequently asked questions

When are SATs and when should we start preparing?

KS2 SATs take place in May of Year 6. KS1 assessments are teacher-assessed throughout Year 2. We recommend starting focused preparation at least 6 months before, though Whizlo's daily assignments build readiness from day one.

What subjects are tested in KS2 SATs?

KS2 SATs cover Maths (arithmetic paper + two reasoning papers), English Reading (one paper), and English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS — two papers). Science is sampled nationally but not taken by every child. Whizlo covers all of these.

What do "Working towards", "Expected", and "Greater depth" mean?

These are the three National Curriculum assessment bands. "Working towards" means your child hasn't yet met the standard for their year group. "Expected" means they're where they should be. "Greater depth" means they're exceeding expectations. Whizlo maps your child's scores to these bands so you always know where they stand.

Does Whizlo use real SATs-style questions?

Yes. Our questions are written to match the format, difficulty, and marking criteria of real SATs papers. Maths includes arithmetic drills and multi-step reasoning. English includes inference, retrieval, vocabulary, and GPS questions in exam format.

Can Whizlo help with KS1 SATs too?

Absolutely. Whizlo covers the full Year 2 curriculum — phonics, reading comprehension, number bonds, place value, shapes, and measurement. While KS1 is now teacher-assessed, practising builds confidence and ensures your child is meeting expectations.

How much does it cost compared to a tutor?

Whizlo is £29.99/month for full access to every subject and year group. A typical SATs tutor charges £30-50 per hour. One month of Whizlo costs less than a single tutoring session, and your child can practise every day.
